In industrial plants, explosions are never rare.
In the field of industrial safety, many assume: If a product has FM** certification, the project is compliant.** But in firestopping projects, the real risks are often not just in the materials, but in the on-site installation.
Whether a material or system, under standard laboratory conditions, meets the specified fire-resistance performance. Firestop product certification verifies:
But conditions at the factory site are far more complex than in a laboratory:
Therefore, product certification can only indicate: this material can be used. It cannot guarantee: this material has been used correctly.
This is also FM's basic logic for firestopping projects: compliant materials are only the starting point; system selection, on-site installation, and completion traceability determine the final risk.
For FM-insured projects or high-risk industrial plants, firestopping should not rely solely on product certificates; attention should also be paid to:
Whether the correct certified system is used; Whether system selection was performed by qualified personnel; Whether installation was carried out according to the system requirements; Whether there are complete installation records and photos; Whether each firestop penetration can be quickly identified on site; Whether it can be traced during future inspections, maintenance, or insurance audits.
If there are only product certificates but no correct installation and complete records, the firestopping may still fail in a fire.
Firestopping is not simply "buy materials, fill the openings."
It is a loss-prevention measure that requires coordination of products, systems, personnel, installation, and documentation.
Product certification addresses material performance; engineering/project management addresses on-site risk.
Truly reliable firestopping not only requires choosing the right materials, but also implementing the correct system, controlling installation quality, keeping records, and enabling traceability.
